You rely upon it day in and day out, and without a cup of it first thing in the morning, you’re not likely to get anything done. Of course, we’re talking about coffee! The beloved drink is consumed around the world and has been for hundreds – no, thousands – of years. Think you know everything there is to know about coffee?
Here are five facts that might surprise you.
Coffee dates back to 800 A.D.
People have relied upon coffee for an instant energy boost for centuries. According to legend, 9th-century goat herders noticed the effect caffeine had on their goats, who appeared to "dance" after eating the fruit of the Coffea plant. Afterward, a local monk made a drink with the fruits and found it kept him up at night.
Only two American states produce coffee.
Odds are, your coffee is from Brazil, the world’s largest coffee producer. However, that doesn’t mean that America hasn’t tried to get in on the coffee industry. Kona coffee is a variety of hailing from Hawaii, where the climate is optimal for harvesting beans. Dozens of California farms also make their own premium coffee blends.
It is possible to overdose on coffee.
Caffeine raises your heart rate and can contribute to feelings of shakiness, mood swings, and more. In fact, it is technically possible to overdose on coffee – though you’d have to drink about 30 cups in a very short period of time to get close to a lethal amount.
Even decaf coffee has a little bit of caffeine.
Did you know that decaf coffee isn’t fully decaffeinated? According to the Mayo Clinic, an eight-ounce brewed cup of decaf coffee contains two to 12 milligrams of caffeine. In comparison, a regular cup of coffee supplies between 95 to 200 milligrams of caffeine.
